Hyatt Regency Kota Kinabalu: The Best Deal in the Hyatt Portfolio

The Hyatt Regency Kota Kinabalu Hotel Review is part of The Year of the Monkey Trip Report which covers the following places:

Getting There: Take Uber from the airport. The bus is 2 ringgit, the taxi is 30, but Uber is 10 or $2.23.

Where is Kota Kinabalu? I used to ask myself that every time I connected in Kuala Lumpur. Finally, I asked Google and it told me that it is a city in the Malaysia part of Borneo. Borneo consists of three countries: Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia. For my country count travelers, Malaysia and Indonesia Borneo count separate from mainland Malaysia and Indonesia. I have already been to Brunei but not the other two. To keep up on my quest to reach 100 ‘countries’, I decided to visit this enchanted island.

Because of its remote location, it was surprising to find a Hyatt in Borneo. I was even more surprised at the price. It was only 2500 points and $40 a night as opposed to the standard rate of $175.

The Location

The Hyatt Regency is located right on the waterfront next to the night market, close to the ferry port, and walking distance to the nightlife.

The Room

I didn’t use a diamond suite upgrade but was more than satisfied with the modern room. I stayed there alternating nights to requalify for diamond. The first time I had a city view and the second time I had the sea view.

The Club Lounge

The club lounge had amazing food. It wasn’t yuck like the Priority Pass in Jakarta. I spent evenings there doing work while drinking terrific Sauvignon Blanc and espresso.

The Pool

Unfortunately, it was raining so I could not enjoy the pool but it too was very nice.

The Service

The staff was great and remembered my name. They provided useful recommendations for where to go out and where to eat.

Overall

I stayed at the Hyatt and Le Meridien. I enjoyed both but will give the slight edge to Hyatt because of the service.
