Simply The Best: December 2016

Twas a fine 2016, albeit a quick one. Now comeith, the bestith postith of December in the year offith 2016.

  1. Cathay First JFK-HKG: Part 1 to Vancouver

Is Cathay a golden shower like Emirates? No. Is it a NY sized apartment like Etihad? Not at all. Is it a book the cook lobster of Singapore? Nope. And it does not have to be.

  2. Singapore Airlines First to Moscow: Lobster, Krug, Givenchy, Prada

I begin this review with the sad news that SQ no longer flies from Houston to Moscow, Russia. The new routing is Houston to Manchester, England. That’s the only negative you will find in this report as everything else was basically perfect.

  3.  The Pier Vs. The Wing: Battle of Cathay’s First Class Lounges

Which is better, The Pier or the Wing? TPOL breaks it down by analyzing critical metrics.

  4. 2016: What I Spent (And Received) in Annual Fees

Another year has gone by and more fees have been paid. For the most part, I did just fine in maximizing the value of the annual fees but not as well as I did last year. I’m slipping on my frugality by rationalizing keeping cards open that should be closed.

  5. Should Kids Be Allowed in The Hotel Lounge?

    No
This was called the best post on Boarding Area for 2016.
  6. Guns & Butter: Cartagena Travel Guide

Unlike my Grand Cayman Travel Guide, the Cartagena Travel Guide is more difficult to write for two reasons: 1) There is so much to do in Cartagena 2) Both times I went to Colombia, Aguardiente played a pivotal role in derailing my plans. With that, let’s start with the most labor intensive activity: a night with aguardiente.

  7. British Airways Lounge JFK: Mashed Potatoes & Gravy

I recommend skipping the first class lounge as it has the feel of a funeral wake. It’s eerily quiet and dark and there is not much of a food selection. On a more positive note, the eggnog was worthy of cousin Eddy.

  1. There’s a lot to be amused by. The golden shower comparison, the picture where you’re looking like you’re fighting with the SQ FA over the Krug, the obvious hell no on kids being allowed in the lounge. Thanks for making the year a little better.
