I needs me rum when I travel. Accordingly, I bought a bottle of Don Q 7 for $33 from SJU airport. It was put in the sealed bag and tucked away in my carry-on (see). Upon my arrival to Madrid, I had an ‘oh shit’ moment when I found out that I had to leave T4, take a bus to T1 to catch my flight on Ryan Air (see). Surely, my duty-free rum would be confiscated when I went through security.
To avoid that embarrassment, I considered throwing it away before I went through security. Instead, I took it out of my carry-on and put it through the x-ray scanner. To my surprise, it went through with no issue.
In the future, I don’t think I would buy duty-free alcohol unless I have an interline ticket. But this time I am happy that it worked in my favor.
Ah the good ol STEB… Security Tamper Evident Bag. Glad that security in Spain was cooperative. TSA in the US actually does have a procedure to allow for this.. and they’re usually the outlier I feel like.
Colombia doesn’t care if it’s in the bag. Often a fight.

Isn’t the USA also supposed to allow for transfer of Duty Free alcohol?
In theory, yes, but it can be a big PITA. I once got my wife a bottle of Jager from Germany (she says it tastes different) in duty free. In the USA they cut open the “safe to travel with” bag to run a mass spectrometer test on the bottle. They cleared it to fly then taped the bag back up.
