Like bombing tiny tug boats in the Caribbean, the administration cites ‘security concerns’ as the explanation. Why is Nvidia allowed to export the second most powerful chip to China, but TPOL can’t purchase the $329 NEO 2? DJI should come to Washington and bring a gold-plated drone to appease Liberace.

Except that’s not what’s happened.
In a myopic and dumbheaded effort to create a US drone manufacturing industry, this administration has banned ALL foreign made drones, not just DJI’s. Of course, there are no US companies making mass market drones in this category, so there’s no domestic industry to protect.
The claim is one of national security, but the reality is that a national security claim is the only grounds the administration has to attempt to get a legal basis to make this sort of restriction without congressional support, so that claim is one of convenience, not fact.
The sad reality is that a handful of “special licenses will be handed out by the FCC to those companies willing to kiss Trump’s ring. Those companies will see some real success from this, not because they make good products at fair prices, but because they’re willing to grease the wheels.
Why isn’t DJI kissing the ring? Who cares? It’s not like anyone really means it. Give him the golden drone and let’s get back to filming.
