Getting There: Hop into a taxi and say Arepas Pues. Every taxi driver knows it. The address is Cra. 2 #490, Cartagena, Bolívar, Colombia
Arepas were invented in Venezuela and some argue that they were perfected in Colombia. I’m not going to make that assertion until I visit Margarita Island to find out for myself. I can say that the arepas in Miami whether they be Venezuelan or Colombian pale in comparison to those in Colombia. I can further say, based on extensive research, that the best place for arepas in either Cartagena or Medellin is a fast food joint named Arepas Pues.
According to Wikipedia, an arepa is a type of food made of ground maize dough or cooked flour prominent. It sounds very simple but turning that dough into deliciousness and adding in the ingredients to perfect it into a sandwich requires special talent. Arepas Pues which opens in the early evening does not close until the early morning has a great selection of arepas at dollar menu prices. In addition, Arepas Pues makes a kick ass hamburger and a pretty good hot dog. Wash it all down with a beer and a Nexium and you are ready to call it a night.
