IHG Free Night Devaluation: Still Not As Bad As Club Carlson

Festivus 2018 has a leading contender. It is Chase’s IHG card which used to provide one free night on the card’s anniversary at any IHG property. I’ve maximized this perk by staying at some pricey properties including the InterContinental Marseille last year and the lousy InterContinental Le Moana Bora Bora the year before. Like everything great in this game, this benefit has come to an end. Going forward, the maximum redemption value is capped at 40,000 points. The complete list of excluded hotels can be found on Lucky’s blog.

While everyone has a right to be upset with this change, it is not as bad as so many devaluations of the past. Remember how cheap it was to stay at top level Hiltons? 50,000 was the max for any hotel including the Conrad Maldives. Now, the cost of a Hilton redemption literally depends on the weather. Still, the worst change was when Club Carlson removed the free night on an award redemption. Even with that devaluation, I kept the Club Carlson twins. Most likely, I will keep this card as well.

The only question that remains is where I will use my current certificate which is good at any IHG property.
