I applied and was approved for the Amex Mercedes Platinum and the Gold Delta SkyMiles Personal and Business card on the same day. The annual fee was due on the Platinum and a call to retention yielded 15k MR’s. I asked if there were anything that could be done on my Delta business. The agent said no. I immediately said cancel because I do not use the card and do not enjoy any benefits from the card. I would rather use my Amex Platinum and get 5x MRs than use my Delta card and earn 2 miles for every dollar spent. Zone 1 boarding is a nice perk as is the first checked bag for free but I will endure without those benefits. My Delta personal took longer to get approved so I expect that annual fee will show up next month. Maybe that retention call will go differently than this one.
And if you’re wondering what I did with the points from my Delta card, I used them to book an incredible flight from JNB to SFO with a long layover in LHR in Virgin Upper Class for 95,000 SkyKyats. That deal is impossible to find with the dramatic Delta devaluations. It is the capstone of my ridiculous fall trip to South America and Africa in business for only 200k points.
