If you’re looking to see another one of Kenya’s great national parks, might I suggest breaking up the trip with an extra day in Nairobi to recuperate. If you’re like me, short on time and patience, then you can make the marathon trek from Mara to Amboceli in one day. The drive, with traffic, is almost twelve hours. It is long, it is bumpy, and it should not be attempted without hiring a professional driver. The same guide that took us to Mara brought us to Amboceli, only stopping two times along the way.
There’s really nothing to see on the journey. We passed by crowds of Mara people who were out for ‘shopping day,’ and we jumped on and off paved roads. Then we got stuck in traffic and had to drive on the shoulder. Nightfall came and we finally arrived at Kibo Safari Camp.
