College Football Playoffs: Who Should Be In?

Who should make the College Football Playoffs? I am documenting my choices because this may be the last time Michigan is in the conversation. I expect Harbaugh to leave, the players to transfer, and the program to be heavily sanctioned. Until that happens, let’s be happy.

Here is TPOL’s 1-4.

  1. Michigan: There should be no doubt that Michigan is number one. We were accused of cheating, didn’t have our head coach for half the season, and yet we beat everyone.
  2. Washington: Washington is undefeated and handled its business in the now-defunct Pac 12.
  3. Alabama: Alabama beat Georgia who had not lost in 2 years. That’s enough to get them in.
  4. Florida State or Texas? If FSU had its quarterback, then FSU would be in automatically. Since it does not and since their second string and third string is not the second coming of Cardale Jones, can FSU be deemed one of the best teams in college football? On the other hand, Texas beat Alabama but had a loss to Oklahoma. If FSU had its QB, FSU should be in and Texas might be out. Luckily for the committee, this isn’t the case. Luckily for me, I believe Michigan can beat Texas.

TPOL’s Plans

I will not attend the semi-final game especially if it’s Michigan against Alabama, though I am researching flights to Houston for the national championship game. However, the last time a Michigan team played in the finals in Texas, I left disappointed (see Final Four San Antonio: Go Blue! Left Blue).

  1. FSU should get in over TX. An undefeated power 5 school has never been excluded. FSU 2nd string QB is very good and will be able to play come game time. Continuing to find ways to win with critical injuries is a sign of a championship level team.

  2. I think Texas will get in over Bama…should they? Eh, doesn’t really matter…head to head (even second game of the season) seems to hold more sway versus how the teams have developed over the subsequent season. Having no dog in the hunt, I’m watching and wondering what the Committee has determined will bring in the most money, since that seems to determine the #4 team, when there’s no undisputed slot.

  3. Ha, so it’s Michigan vs Alabama and Washington vs Texas. If (and that’s a big if) the Horns beat the Huskies, then Texas will play either Alabama twice during the same (2023) season or Michigan twice during the same (2024) calendar year, despite all three programs being in different conferences (until Texas joins the SEC next year). Wild times.

  4. Absolutely should be Florida State. Not a coincidence that Alabama got in since ESPN controls the playoffs and spent $3B for broadcast rights starting next year
