Top to Bottom: Visiting Luxembourg City

Visiting Luxembourg City is part of the #NoCollusion, No Albania for TPOL where I break my 100 country count mark. See the World Map for where I’ve been.

After watching The Patriot on Amazon, an overlooked but hysterical show, I wanted to go to Luxembourg. Granted, the show was filmed in Prague but the events took place in Luxembourg City. I stayed at the Park Inn, a more than adequate hotel in the business side of the Luxembourg. Here’s what I did the first night.a river running through a city a black metal staircase on a building a city with buildings and trees a building with a fence and bushes a sign on a wall a bridge over a river a park with a bridge and treesI was there.

L’Observatoire Bar at the Sofitel

Looking for a great view of the city, head to the Sofitel hotel.

Walk Across the Adolphe Bridge

You’ve seen it from on high, now walk across the bridge to the Old Town.

Explore the Old Town

Walking through old towns throughout the world is one of my favorite activities. It doesn’t require a tour guide nor does it require a destination (see Astray in Old Town: Great Places to Get Lost).

a courtyard of a building with a lawn and trees in the background a statue in front of a building a building with a flag on top a park with flags and a bridge in the background

Some of the old town is too modern for my taste. It reminded me of Yu Garden Shanghai where every chain restaurant was on display and where every opportunity for price gouging was available (see Don’t Pay $30 for Tacos).

Could this be the only Chi-chi’s that’s still in business?

Mussels

Do stop for some mussels. For 20 euros it’s the best deal in Luxembourg.

Back to Exploring

If you managed to hold on to get past the city center, you’ll enjoy the quiet streets that follow.

a street sign on a pole a street with buildings and a car parked on the side a narrow street between buildings a building with a steeple and a sign on the side a stone wall with people on it a bridge over a rocky cliff a city with a tall tower and a rivera city with buildings and trees

Lost

Lost, I ended up at a bar below a bridge. a bridge with a bridge over it a water next to a stone wallFound

The bar had my favorite beer.

Walk Home

Walking home, I had the opportunity to take more photos.

a river running through a city a black metal staircase on a building a city with buildings and trees a building with a fence and bushes a sign on a wall a bridge over a river

Partying

Luxembourg is full of bankers that do more than go to work and go home. Unfortunately, I was there on a weekday so the bar area called “Rives de Clausen” was empty. I found my way to an Irish pub that was lively but closed early.

a street with lights and buildings at night a group of people sitting on a sidewalk outside a building

TPOL’s TIP: Though it is tough to plan, it is advisable to go to small cities on the weekend to see what the party scene is like. Big cities usually have something going on every night.

Overall

I saw Luxembourg City from top to bottom. And I mean that in the literal sense from the bar at the Sofitel to the bar at the bottom of the bridge.

Rainy Season? Visa? Lessons from Travel (ANA Edition)

I created the page, TPOL’s Travel Lessons, to document all the dumb things I did in the hopes I’d learn from my mistakes. Here’s what I learned from my ANA, Take Me ‘Round the World Trip Report.

Hotel Indigo Brooklyn: Just Basic

Hotel Indigo Brooklyn Hotel Review is part of the TPOL in NYC ongoing Trip Report and the ANA, Take Me ‘Round the World Trip Report.

Getting There: Take the AirTrain + LIRR combo.

Some people swear by the IHG brand. I do not. I never participate in their points promotion and typically only stay at one of their hotels if there is a smoking points deal (see IC Phoencia vs. Le Vendome Beirut: Either Way, Time to Splurge) or if I have a stay certificate (InterContinental David Tel Aviv: Worth Burning the Cert). Another trip to NY meant another night in a hotel. This time prices weren’t dirt cheap so I used my stay certificate for the Hotel Indigo Brooklyn. a black double doors with glass windows

Location

There’s a cluster of hotels in downtown Brooklyn including the Sheraton, Aloft, and Indigo. The location is convenient if you need to be close to the federal courthouse or near the financial district.

a city skyline at night
What a view.

Service

The service is lousy. The front desk is rude. I had a suit pressed and delivered to the hotel. They didn’t bother calling me to say that it had arrived. They did call to say that I had stayed past my ‘late’ 2PM checkout. I said I was waiting for my suit to be delivered. I called the dry cleaners and asked when I could expect it. They said it was delivered at 12. I called the front desk again and they said it had arrived. Too annoyed to fight, I went down, retrieved my suit, changed, and left.

Room

This is a basic room. The night I stayed, the room was going for $800. I can’t believe anyone or any company would spend that much for this.

Overall

This place has zero value. I burned the certificate to avoid paying crazy NY hotel prices.

Welcome to USA: The Anticlimactic Return

Anticlimactic return is part of the ANA, Take Me ‘Round the World Trip Report.

Returning to the USA after being gone for seven weeks (see ANA, Take Me ‘Round the World Trip Report and TPOL in Shanghai Trip Report) is anticlimactic. Nobody cares that I am back. I go through immigration with Global Entry and don’t receive a welcome back greeting from the machine. Getting ‘randomly searched’ used to be an inconvenience, but now I would welcome it as a way to show that America cares that I am home. The business class treatment is gone, and I’m back to being another random person lost in a big city, a foreigner in my own country. How depressing.

EVA Air Flight Review TPE-JFK: The Best Business Class

EVA Flight Review Taipei New York is part of the ANA, Take Me ‘Round the World Trip Report.

I have been on many planes, and I have written many business class flight reviews including:

*Though I have flown Qatar business, I have not flown the new Qsuites.

Based on my experience, I can say that the best business class is EVA. Here’s why:

Krug

Krug is only found on first-class flights (see Cathay Pacific First Class JFK-HKG: 15.5 Hours of Bliss). But what do we have here?

a bottle of champagne and a glass of champagne on a tray a glass of champagne on a table That could end the debate right there, but allow me to continue.

Service

The service on EVA is impeccable. Regarding my Krug consumption, the flight attendant said, “I will make it more full because I know you like it.” How great is that?

a glass and a plate of food on a table
Was only empty for a moment.

Amenities Kit

I have to force myself to throw away amenities kits. I don’t need dozens of them, and I will never use all of them. This one I had to keep. The contents I discarded.

a red suitcase on a blue surface a suitcase with a red towel and a tube of toothpaste on a blue surface a hat and socks on a plane

Appetizer

Truly madly deeply, I was ready to eat. The soup was good and the rootbeet creamy salad dressing with fresh lemon was exceptional.
a table with food and a glass of wine on ita plate of food on a white platea bowl of soup and a glass of winea salad with a pink sauce on ita person pouring a glass of champagne into a glass of wine

Beef!

The steak tasted like steak instead of airplane meat. It actually had a red center.

a plate of food with a piece of meat and vegetables a piece of meat on a plate

Fruit, Cheese, Wine

It’s not often that I find myself saying, “How good is this fruit?”

a plate of fruit on a white surface

Beyond my limit of Krug, I switched to a hearty Spanish red.

a plate of food on a table

More of Everything

Unlike Cathay business where I find myself hungry, EVA kept me full.

a plate of food on a table a bowl of soup with meatballs and vegetables
Espresso

A proper espresso came as no surprise.

a cup of coffee on a saucer

FIJI

I won’t buy FIJI water, but I do enjoy it. a bottle of water and a cell phone on a table

Pajamas

Not all business class flights provide pajamas. This one did and they were stylish.

EVA Airways is #1 in my book for business.

TPOL Knows Cologne, Just Don’t Buy It on a Plane

Cologne is part of the ANA, Take Me ‘Round the World Trip Report.

Much like I have a refined palette for quality wine, I have a keen nose for cologne. Since I was a kid, I used to collect bottles. My trove surpassed 50 at one point. Moving from place to place, I lost many along the way though many classics are still at my parents’ house. These include but are not limited to:

  • Hannae Mori
  • Dolce & Gabbana
  • Issey Miyake
  • Cool Water
  • Bvlgari (green bottle)
  • Versace Metal Jeans
  • Versace MAN
  • Jean Paul Gaultier
  • Nautica
  • Escape
  • Pasha de Cartier
  • Eternity
  • Polo Sport

*Acqua di Gio had to be removed due to overuse by the masses.

** Joop! Had to be removed because everyone would pass out if I wore it.

*** Hugo Boss had to be removed because after a night in Mallorca, it reminded me of tequila shots. It does win the award for clever bottle.

****Not on the list are Fahrenheit and Obsession and Michael Jordan. Those are just spicy nastiness.

*****I won’t reveal what’s in TPOL’s closet today. That’s proprietary. But if anyone has the now discontinued Emirates first-class Bvlgari in the red bottle, please send it over.

When I visit a department store, the employee’s worst mistake is asking, “Can I help you?” After showing me a few samples that I inevitably shoot down, the employee quickly disappears. On rare occasions, I end up with an old-school aficionado and we discuss the history of cologne and the evolution of fragrance. That is a great experience. Still, I typically walk away distraught that nothing innovative has been created. Much like hip-hop, fragrances are recycled and resold as the new hotness (see any Drake album).

With such a sophisticated and particular taste in cologne, I made the most amateur of mistakes by purchasing a bottle on my EVA flight from Taiwan to New York. I relied on the description in the Sky Duty Free magazine to tell me what the cologne would smell like. J. Peterman would have been disappointed by words that did not reflect the odor of this parfum.

a group of toiletries and a box of toiletries

To my credit, I thought I was making a safe choice because I have and enjoy the original Bvlgari Man and thought the wood infusion would mix the power of Issey Miyake with the tenderness of Bvlgari (now that’s a line for J. Peterman). It did not. Unlike Strangé, it did not stink so good. It smelled awful. On top of that, I overpaid.

Good cologne is like speakers. Good cologne is like wine. Good cologne is like an automobile. Buying it without sampling it is downright foolish.

TPOL’s TIP: Don’t buy cologne in the air. Don’t buy it in a department store. Buy it online, after you test it, of course.

Eva Air Lounge Taipei: Don’t Arrive Early

Eva Air Lounge Review Taipei is part of the ANA, Take Me ‘Round the World Trip Report.

Sometimes I enjoy spending all day at the lounge (see Air New Zealand Lounge Auckland: Sit Back & RelaxAmex LAS Centurion Lounge: The Full Day Freeloader Review, & AA Admirals Club JFK Gate 42: Here All Day). I thought that would be the case in Taipei when I visited the EVA Air lounge. It was not. Based on all the great things I heard about the airline’s business class product, I expected the same from the lounge. Instead, I found a basic lounge with basic amenities.

a large rectangular sign with purple lights

No Beds

There was no place to lay my head. That was a surprise.

a freezer with different flavors of ice cream hot dogs on a tray a bowl of ice cream a hot dog with ketchup and rice on a plate a basket of pastries and donuts a hot dog with rice and ketchup on a platea hot dog with ketchup on top

Drinks

I started my journey on August 3rd going from Newark to Brussels on United Polaris. It was now the end of September. The desire to drink had passed, to say the least. Even if I wanted to have a cocktail, I would have to be pretty desperate to resort to Jose Cuervo. a group of bottles on a stand

More Food

With nothing to do, I kept eating.a display of food on ice a row of food containers with noodles and vegetables a buffet line with food in containers

The Lounge Itself

The rest of the time I wondered who designed this hideous, futuristic lounge.

Overall

If I was here for a couple of hours, I probably would have been satisfied with what it offers. Staying all day was not my idea of a great lounge time (see Skipping Airport Lounges with No Regrets).

Air China PVG-TPE: Good ZZZ

Air China PVG TPE is part of the ANA, Take Me ‘Round the World Trip Report.

I’ve flown business on Air China many times. It does not get the respect it deserves. While it was a short flight from Shanghai to Taipei, it was a restful one.

Checking In

Here’s what happens if you fly peasant:

The Lounge

Per my policy, I don’t write a review of the lounge if I go and there is nothing to report. I stopped by the Air China Lounge but skipped food after a huge breakfast at the Four Points Shanghai.

The Flight

All this travel caught up to me. I took a few photos and passed out. Here they are:
